Basement Skate, located in the heart of Redfern, has been a go to for Sydney locals for over 12 years. Owned by Robbo, with Ryan behind the counter – a combo that can’t be beaten. Ryan can’t remember life before skating – a true, dedicated skater to the core. “Once it gets is your blood, it becomes a life thing.”
Ryan has managed the store for over 10 years and jumped at the chance to become part of the Basement Skate team. Being able to share the passion and experiences he has had in skateboarding has been a humbling experience – but like all of us, he is still a big kid playing with skateboards!
Basement Skate holds a huge range of skate products to cater for all ages and disciplines. A full workshop in store for repair and maintenance services, allows Basement to interact and share their extensive knowledge with complete beginners to seasoned skaters. Guiding a skateboarder through the selection and getting them set up on the right gear brings smiles all round! “Having wall to wall skate gear and hearing people’s reaction as the walk in is priceless!”
Product donations to promote skate competitions, jams, downhill races, slalom races, school projects and their lucky dip on school holidays is Basement’s way of giving back to their skate community – always eager to spread the love. With a strong store team consisting of street and park skaters to downhill and slalom skaters, there are a couple of locals we will be keeping our eye on. Basement’s youngest and most recent team rider is Robbie Blake, at 12 years old he loves his bigger boards and has that epic style coming out of his surfing.
After World Skate Games and Imogen McMillan taking on the best slalom skaters in the world and bringing Australia home a 7th place ranking, Robbo and Ryan are eager to support Imogen in her dream to become world champion (if you don’t know Imogen or Slalom skating, be sure to check it out!!).
It’s crazy times out there right now, and retail more than ever needs our support. Support the local store that supports you, a world without skate stores would be a sad world indeed!
